The headrest starts with several 2” thick pieces of wood turned vertically, rather than one long piece running horizontally. These pieces are then “coopered” together which allow for a much deeper curve in the headrest. This curve transitions down to the back brace placement resulting in both cradling the occupant in the center of the chair.
The back legs and headrest effectively become one as they are bonded then sculpted together. Their parallel grain makes for a much stronger joint. The grain patterns and figuring flow from the headrest down the back legs and back braces to the seat. Inlays are often used to accent the headrest.
